happy memorial day!
unfortunately, to me it meant sales. look what american culture has done to me. otherwise i would be memoralizing on this day, but i'm not. so instead i went shopping. i haven't bought a new dress in a while, and since i have 2 back-to-back banquets this weekend, i figured i owe it to myself. so yeah, i tried on all these dresses today trying to find the right one. i had something in mind, but it was really hard to find it. i wanted either a black or reddish one that had an asymmetrical cut at the bottom. yeah i know i sound really girlie right now, but i think i deserve to be! so yes, i found one that was red and black. =) at any rate, it's the skankiest dress i've ever bought so don't anyone be alarmed, because i am well aware of the fact that it's scandalous! but at the same time, my version of scandalous usually never equates with other ppl's definition of it. yeah yeah call me square, whatever. i'm just trying to figure out if i should wear it for ucsd's apsa grad banquet on sat which, once again, eveyone is invited to! so it's between the skanky dress and my more conservative, elegant dress. such dilemmas in my life...

got back from SOLO (Student Orgs & Leadership Opportunities) Award Banquet, and i just have a few words to share:
alex, you're dope u are an awesome writer and person, and i can't thank u enough for your generous contribution. but even more than that, i don't know how to thank u for the truly amazing words u have shared about me. thank u so much, again and again. u are inspiring and one of the most admirable people i know...

words from alex read aloud at tonite's banquet:
"Just as I wanted to establish an award that recognizes an individual student for their hard work, commitment, and tireless efforts to make this campus community so much more than just a harsh academically competitive institution, I also believe that the staff at SOLO are often unrecognized for the tremendous impact that they have on improving student life here at UCSD. If it wasn’t for SOLO, I know I would not be where I currently am today.

When I approached Yolanda earlier this year with the idea of recognizing an individual graduating senior for outstanding leadership and service, I had in mind an student who was able to manage the tremendous academic demands of attending UCSD, but who also did not lose sight of the importance of serving and giving back to the community.

Upon hearing that I had decided to sponsor this type of award after only graduating from UCSD last year, many people were shocked and in amazement at how, and more importantly, why someone as young and fresh out of college would feel compelled to do something like this. No, I do not live lavishly or have a six-figure salary, in fact I am currently a graduate student who is continuing to accumulate student loans. And I guess I could have waited until I was a little more “stable” to give back, but then I realized that if I waited until then, what about those who deserve to be recognized now. If I could leave you all with one message tonight, it is the importance of giving back to your community every single day of your lives, not just some day in the future or only when it is convenient for you, but today, tomorrow, and every single day that follows. It is this type of commitment, service, and leadership that this award wishes to recognize.

Having had the pleasure of getting to know this individual, I know how she truly does embody the spirit of leadership and service which this award was established for. I could go on about my own observations of how dedicated and committed this student has been, but instead I think that you will get a better picture from a little excerpt that I took from her online blog: [monday's entry here. yes, it was read aloud to everyone in the room.]

Let me remind you, this is just an excerpt from one weekend, and even though most people would hate to have even one weekend as hectic and packed as what was just described, I know that this individual’s commitment to the community has resulted in countless days, weeks, months, and years under the same sort of madness and hysteria.

It is for this, and for the countless other things she has done for UCSD and the community that I am extremely pleased to present the very first Alexis Montevirgen Outstanding Leadership and Service Award to Ms. Janet Lee. I only wish that I could be here in person and present this award to her myself."

alex... thank u again.

*breathe* i am so tired. soooo busy. my weekends are usually reserved for Me Time, but that really didn't happen this time around. this weekend proved to be the one of the busiest yet...
friday
my week does not end. it starts at 8 am with a meeting for SIORC (again, that's Student Initiated Outreach and Recruitment Committee, pronounced "source"). then my TA meeting at 10. and then go home and continue editing video i had been working on the nite before until 4:30am. get it done and take it over at 4pm. talk with Upward Bound people and apply for summer RA position again. get home just before 6. eat a little something even though i have to now get ready for a dinner. get dressed up and make myself look somewhat presentable for the UCI VAC (vietnamese american coalition) banquet. drive to dana point for banquet, go to dinner, eat drink and be merry. get back home with jason around 1? emails, shower, etc...sleep about an hour later.

saturday
try to get up at 4:30am but that really does not happen. get up at 8am and meet with fellow APSA graduating seniors to work on our Senior Surprise for our end of year banquet on June 1. can't really tell you what we did and what went on until 11:30am, cuz then it wouldn't be a surprise. it's very dope and i hope everyone can make it to the banquet, as it is open to everyone! only 20-some-odd dollars for full course meal and lotsa dope entertainment. come back home and drag jason with me to Upward Bound's last saturday session at 12:30. it is upward bound summer program reunion! hugs for everyone and lotsa catching up to be done. go out to eat dim sum with jason at 2. come back home, watch lakers game, and conk out as i am extremely tired. get up, spend some time with jason and he leaves. i got to apsa retreat around 9pm. workshops, games, feel good activities until i don't know when. all tons of fun but exhausting!

sunday
get woken up at 8am and then 8:30 and then 8:45... finally get up and get ready. breakfast and more dope workshops. clean up house and leave retreat around 12pm. plan on going to Rice Bowl - a picnic/sports event of all the asian orgs and whatnot. it's too late for me so i end up not going. go home, grab a bite to eat, head over to north park street fair to volunteer at children's art booth from 2:45 - 6:00pm. kids kick ass. they are so creative and unafraid to make and draw when they feel. what happens to us when we age? we need to foster their creativity... i love them kids. they rock =) ok. then i grocery shop and come home to eat dinner. parents come over around 8:45 because have to switch cars for my performances this week. they drop off the minivan and take my car home. but before they leave we talk for a while, i show them stuff in my room and we just catch up. i love my parents! =) they go home around 10. i need time to relax.. i chat on AIM then eventually type incoherent messages to friends. zonk out on my bed.

monday.. today
it doesn't end. my body somehow wakes me up at 8am. realize i'm already late for SIORC meeting get my ass up and go. am way too tired to tutor. i come home around 10 and am now here missing tutoring. i can't do it. i have all this homework and regular work i have to get done.... am venting. thank u all for listening. i can do this, though!!! only 3 more weeks left. tonite is my last APSA officer meeting.

oh. and good news. my obsession with tobey maguire has been toned down a few notches. =) oh but don't get me wrong. he's still on my wallpaper. =)

Monday, May 13, 2002

nevermind! we're going to make it a roomie outting and all go watch Episode II together at midnite. =) yayyy~ and for whoever else wants to go too. have yet to decide between fashion or mission valley. i tend to prefer the latter. i shall go find out! may the force be with u.

yesterday was a really really hot, dry day in LA and OC. =P such a drastic change that my nose bled. twice. a lot. it wasn't fun. =( i don't think san diego was as bad. i hope my nose doesn't bleed like that again anytime soon. actually, i just hope it doesn't happen when i don't have access to tissue paper.

WANTED: fellow star wars fan to come watch episode II with me this wednesday. i can't break my streak. i'm available only for show times that start between 1 and 2. i would watch 12:01am but i doubt i can get a hold of tickets for that time. it would be great if someone could hook me up =)=) =) hehee.. ok we'll see. talk to me!

Sunday, May 12, 2002

my boyfriend is so wonderful... =) he took me to see all these cute guys in one nite. how generous of him!!! *muah muah muah*
last nite he took me to my very first concert. yes i have been very deprived. well, i mean i've been to like symphony concerts and stuff, but not live well-known band concerts. yes, i've never gone to the free concerts here at ucsd either. so yeah, we saw the calling and sugar ray at the arrowhead pond in anaheim.. for free!! our seats were up in the balcony but heck, i'm not one to complain.

the calling will be honored as my very group i've heard in concert. alex band, the lead singer, really has an amazing voice. for someone who could probably pass for 15, he's got a very deep voice. he sounded amazing live. he finished off with "wherever you will go." he's a cutie too. the calling is local group from san fernando valley! that was crazy. on top of that, i didn't know sugar ray was from newport beach! they followed the calling, singing all their famous songs like "runaway," "fly," "someday," "every morning" i think? anyway, all the girls went ga-ga over mark mcgrath. it was really funny and interesting to watch. he actually went out into the crowd and walked around and everyone was totally touching him. it's weird to see celebrities in real life. u'r looking at them and they're just performers. at any rate, i had lotsa fun!

afterward jason and i went right next door to the theatres and were thinking about watching a movie. unfortunately there were hardly any movies playing by 11pm. i had to pee, so we went inside the theatre anyway. very weird design, because the restrooms were not located in the lobby. they were in the hallways past the point where they take your ticket. so jason asked the usher(?) where the bathrooms were, told him we didn't buy tickets, but the guy let us in to use the restrooms. i was really surprised, so i was like.. uh ok thanx! and when i walked in i was like.. mmm. that wasn't terribly smart on his part. needless to say, after jason and i did our duties, we waltzed right into a theatre. spider-man had just started at 10:30 so we made ourselves comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed tobey maguire onscreen. ok maybe not him so much as it was me. =)~ heheee... alright alright. so yes that's that. tobey is hot.

watching it a second time made me notice certain things about the movie, however. as much as i enjoyed it as a cinematic experience, i had qualms about the way they cast certain roles. for example, if u guys have not watched it yet, or if you have already watched, try to recall who they cast as the liquor/convenient store owners. no no, why don't u just take a stab at it. go ahead. yes, asians. alright, what about the roles of the gangbangers who try to rob and/or rape mary jane watson in the rain? just guess... yes, u'r probably right. latinos. and call me crazy if the robber who shoots uncle ben didn't look a hint of middle-eastern resemblance. well, this is just me, but yeah. kind of pissed me off that asians were non-existent in the movie as extras or anything, 'cept for the liquor store scene. =/ still a lot more work to be done....

mad mad props to KP's Pilipino Culture Night/Celebration!!!
what an amazing effort. i only regret that i haven't attended in previous years. it was really cool to see so many people i knew up there doin their thing. =) aldrin, cat, vaness, teresa, jon mentee!!, david reyes, ian, jeff green, daniel, ronnel, april (what a beautiful dancer!), gosh i'm sure i'm forgetting some names. =P at any rate, i was blown away and i know steve enjoyed the show equally. =) goooo PCC!!! *muah*! [insert unity clap here]

hey sushi fans out there~ lemme recommend to u an awesome little shindig down in hillcrest called Sushi Itto. i took jason there for his bday dinner last nite and it was the perfect place! casual yet nice, very contemporary interior, and best of all very decent prices. jason and i shared a bowl of edamame, miso soup, a whole plate of tempura, 3 orders of unique sushi rolls (8 pcs each), a glass of plum wine, and complimentary tempura fried ice cream all for 40 buckaroos. both of us were stuffed and service was excellent. i know this sounds like a freakin restaurant review, but if u guys are ever lookin for somewhere nice to take a friend or significant other, this place should definitely be on your list!

Reasons why i am obsessed with Tobey Maguire:
1. he's hot
2. he's a freakin hottie
3. he's a real cutie
4. he's seriously hot
5. he's got the most adorable boyish charm about him
6. don't u think he's godamn hot??

does anyone know if u can order just one issue of GQ [very hot pic of tobey] even if it was back in March? the weirdest thing, i have a thing for tobey, and jason has a thing for zhang ziyi... and they happened to be on the cover together. strange. i need to own a copy of that issue. b/c tobey is HOT. =P~

Monday, May 06, 2002

happy birthday to jason! wheee~!! hopefully he'll be able to come down tonite and i'll treat him out. =)

p.s. tobey maguire is hot. of course, so is jason but that goes without saying, right? hehe

Sunday, May 05, 2002

wow what a weekend... let's see. i went home and switched back to my car finally, after 5 weeks of driving around a minivan. the sacrifice i make for performances... =) at any rate, yeah so i get my car back. everything LOOKED fine. but alas, i knew i couldn't possibly have been so lucky. my brother goes to ucla. like i wasn't gonna get a scratch or a door dent. but a freakin HIT and RUN?!?! that's just fucked up. so now my bumper is shifted over, my trunk is misaligned, and my paint is slightly scratched. at first it's not noticeable, but once u stand there and look at it, u'll notice it alright. =( *sigh* needless to say i was quite pissed, but what can i do. when i go to ucla, i'm sure i should expect worse...

alright, if you haven't seen Spider-man yet, you neeeeed to go watch it! for a cinematic experience it was really good. =) and i've heard from a number of faithful Spidey fans that the movie stays pretty darn true to the comics. maybe it has something to do with the fact that Stan Lee was one of the producers. at any rate, it's a good movie, put simply. plus it definitely helped that Tobey Maguire is so gosh darned cute!! really he is. he's right there behind Jude Law. well, i dunno. dangit they're both extremely pleasant eye candy. hahaa.. this is funny. i don't usually talk like this. ok just go watch the movie!

so i bought a new monitor from my friend. a 17" flat screen monitor, not flat panel. *i wish* gave my old monitor to my brother and he gave me his speakers. i never realized how shitty my speakers that were built into the monitor were. hehe, oh well. better music now =) not the best quality, but better nonetheless. no complaints here!

tomorrow is my boo's birthday. =) yet another year to add on to his age.. hehe. don't ask me how old he is. u can ask him himself. we had lunch together today, but idiot me i forgot to give him the stuffs i got him. =P i'ma doink. it's ok, i hope he comes down tomorrow. =) =) =) happy happy.. uh.. 21st birthday jason!wow aren't u so happy u'r finally legal now?..... =)

happy happy birthday mayrin!!! wow so many ppl showed up at Friday's to celebrate her 22nd! and ppl kept strolling in. =) it was a lot of fun despite the fact that i was sick. i kinda felt like a pooper, as i was just fatigued and out of it. i kept referring to things in really weird terms. while talking to my roommate i called a thermometer a temperature reader and a camera as a picture taker. gosh i didn't know my mental capabilities would be bogged down so much. at any rate, maybe it's my body telling me to slow down. i'm tutoring at 3 different school sites, i'm at a school everyday, i have classes, plenty of homework, and lots of time-consuming meetings to go to. (not as many as mayrin though!) i'll take this weekend to rest up a bit. no time to fall behind though, have extra work and projects to attend to. just 6 more weeks.... i wanna make it memorable =)
